Akari 1N Table Lantern, φ24×H41cm (Pre-Order)
The Akari 1N, with the letter “N” standing for “New,” represents a new generation of Akari models compared to the original 1A, which Isamu Noguchi designed in 1952. Released in 1968, the N-series Akari lamps embody a stronger sculptural presence — their relaxed, organic bamboo ribs and soft contours give them the appearance of naturally formed sculptures. Among the Akari table lamps, the 1N is one of the most beloved models and was a favourite lighting piece in the home of Noguchi’s close friend, painter Genichiro Inokuma.
The Akari lights are handcrafted of bamboo ribbing and translucent washi paper that is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Isamu Noguchi has compared the light of Akari to sunlight filtered through traditional shōji paper doors – the light sculptures create a warm glow and pleasant ambience. According to Noguchi, "All that you require to start a home are a room, a tatami, and Akari.”
